Whileaway for iPhone and getwhileaway.com · Last updated October 14, 2026
The short version. Your library lives on your phone. There are no accounts. We don't sell data, show ads, or track you across apps or websites. To work, the app sends a few things to our server: public details about links you save, sentences you type into Ask, and anonymous usage counts. None of it is tied to your name or email.
What stays on your phone
Everything you save (links, titles, lengths, your progress, the moments you pick) is stored on your iPhone, in a container shared only between the Whileaway app and its share extension. We have no copy of your library. Deleting the app deletes it.
What the app sends, and why
| What | Why | Who handles it |
|---|---|---|
| Public details of a link you save: the address, and the title, description and similar information the page or platform publishes | To work out what the item is, how long it is, whether it works as audio, and which moments it suits | Our server, which passes it to Anthropic's Claude for analysis. Lengths come from YouTube's and Spotify's public APIs, using only the video or episode ID. |
| A sentence you type into Ask Whileaway, like "something light for 25 minutes" | To turn it into filters. Only the sentence is sent; your library never leaves the phone. | Our server and Anthropic's Claude |
| Anonymous usage events, like "a Moment was opened", "a plan had 3 sections" or "an item was saved from Spotify" | To learn what works and what to fix | Our server |
| A random install ID created by the app | To apply daily limits on analysis and Ask, and to count events per install | Our server |
Usage events never contain links, titles, what you typed, or anything you saved. They carry only fixed labels (for example "walking", "spotify", "20 minutes") and counts. The install ID is random. It isn't your Apple ID, your device's advertising identifier, or anything that identifies you, and deleting the app resets it.
Feedback
If you send feedback from Settings, your email app sends it to us. It includes what you write plus a short technical note (app version, iOS version, device model and how many items you have saved). It never includes your links or the install ID. We use your email address only to reply.
The website and waitlist
If you join the waitlist on getwhileaway.com, we store your email address and the answers you choose to give: phone type, the moment you want most, whether you'd pay after a trial, and a referral code. We count page visits by headline and source (such as the link you came from), and we keep a scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address for a short time to stop spam sign-ups. We use your email only to invite you to the beta and tell you about Whileaway's launch. Every email has a way to opt out.
Who we share data with
- Cloudflare hosts our server, website and database.
- Anthropic analyzes link details and Ask sentences through its API.
- YouTube and Spotify receive a video or episode ID when we look up its length.
We don't sell or rent data, and we don't share it with advertisers or data brokers.
How long we keep it
Usage events are kept while we're improving the app in beta and are deleted or fully aggregated within 12 months. Daily-limit counters are kept for days, not months. Waitlist entries are kept until you ask us to remove them or until we no longer need them for the launch.
Your choices
- Delete the app to remove your library and reset your install ID.
- Ask us to delete your waitlist entry, or anything else we hold, by emailing the address below.
- Because usage events aren't linked to you, we can't pick out one person's events. They stop when you delete the app.
Children
Whileaway isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top, and tell people on the waitlist and in the beta about anything significant.
